Jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis is a native of New Orleans, and comes from a musical family. His father, Ellis Marsalis, Jr. was a music professor and pianist, and his three brothers, Delfeayo, Wynton, and Jason, are also jazz musicians. Branford is known for his leadership of the Branford Marsalis Quartet, and for his position on “The Tonight Show,” where he led the band from 1992 until 1995. Although primarily a jazz virtuoso, He also frequently appears with classical ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic.
Marsalis attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, then transferred to Berklee College of Music in Boston. During his time at Berklee, Marsalis played baritone and alto sax on a European tour with drummer Art Blakey’s ensemble. He also had the chance to work with Clark Terry and Lionel Hampton, and toured Japan with Herbie Hancock. He worked with Sting on the singer’s initial solo effort, “The Dream of the Blue Turtles,” and in 1985, he formed the Branford Marsalis Quartet, the work for which he is probably best known.
