Folk-rock indie band to play Cincinnati

A New England duo has created a following with a contradictory approach, combining dark lyrics with cheerful music.

The Ballroom Thieves started out in 2010, with Martin Earley on guitar and Devin Mauch handling the drums. In 2013, the group added a third member, Calin Peters, a cellist. With the lineup established, the band released their debut album, “A Wolf in the Doorway,” in 2015, and took to the road to promote it. They found touring difficult, and their struggles became the material for their second album, “Deadeye,” which they dropped in 2016.

Their hard work was rewarded when they signed with Nettwerk, which released their EP, “Paper Crown,” in 2018 and then “Unlovely.” This full-length album appeared in 2020, and explored themes of social and political discord, including inequality and selfishness. Late in the year, Mauch left the group, leaving Peters and Earley to carry on as a duo.

The two released singles like “Harry Styles” and “Worldender,” changing their direction to a more pop sound. Their new styling produced 2022’s “Clouds,” their fourth album, on which they used the difficulties of recent years, including the pandemic, as inspiration. In short, they translate problems into song.

A review says:

“Deep, heart thumping lyrics and instrumental dynamics that make each song memorable and every performance tightwe [sic] than before.”

The Ballroom Thieves will be at the Ludlow Garage on October 16. Colorful advertising is vital to events like this, and organizers can use poster printing to create it.
