What's Happening in Cincinnati, OH…

Body camera distribution to start in August

The Cincinnati Police Department will start distributing body cameras to officers in all of its districts beginning in August, according to an article on the WLWT website.

The department will hand out 700 of the devices, and the process is expected to take the rest of the year. The department will first start distributing devices in Cincinnati's downtown business district. If everything goes according to plan, all Cincinnati police officers will be wearing cameras by June, 2017.

Harry Black, the city manager, said one of Cincinnati's priorities is to be sure the initial distribution is handled correctly. He said the city would have “state-of-the-art procedures and policies” along with “state-of-the-art technologies” in play. The law committee of the City Council was made aware of this thinking, which comes from both the city manager and a police team that has been examining the issue for almost two years, when Black spoke on June 27.

Although policies for using the cameras are still being developed, some points have been decided. For example, police can use their cameras to record video in private homes, provided the officers are on the premises legally. In addition, they do not need to tell residents they are making a recording.

Police will be activating their cameras in almost all circumstances, though the videos will not be made widely available.

Agencies like these can benefit from brochures that explain complex issues in detail.
