Winterfest contest: Does Akron have talent?

Akron’s Winterfest celebration will take place February 18 through 20 in honor of Presidents’ Day. This year’s celebration hopes to blow in a stream of talent as the Chamber of Commerce plans an exciting take-off of the popular television contest “America’s Got Talent.”

If all goes as planned, “Akron’s Got Talent” promises to be the main event of the weekend celebration. Funds for the event would be raised through ticket sales, application fees, advertisements placed by local businesses in the program and sales of refreshments and merchandise during the show.

Large community events and festivities such as the Akron Winterfest often require printing services from local and surrounding print companies. Banner printing, flyer printing and other services are often needed.

Chamber board member Deborah Bodenschatz recently approached the Akron Board of Education seeking permission to join forces with the drama department for the event. The Chamber hopes to make use of the high school’s stage and auditorium for “Akron’s Got Talent!” Daniel Caprio, president of the Akron Board of Education, raised some concerns about where the financial responsibilities of the event would fall. Board members are expected to reach a decision on the matter at their next meeting on January 11.

“Akron’s Got Talent!” will be open to residents in the Newstead and Akron area. Contestants of all ages will be welcome to sign up for the event. Participants will be required to provide a complete description of the act they intend to perform before being approved to audition in the elimination round. The event will most likely occur on Saturday evening.
