Multi-million-dollar Akron Zoo expansion plan revealed

The Akron Zoo has petitioned Akron City Council for an additional 16 acres of land to go with the 35 acres it already occupies.

The city’s zoo contains over 2,000 animals at present with the hoped for 16-acre addition to be used, according to documents submitted by the zoo, to expand the “Pride of Africa” exhibit. The additional acreage would include a large habitat enclosure for giraffes, ostriches, marabou storks and wildebeests, along with a giraffe barn, and observation deck, plus, an ADA accessible tower ride 30 feet tall.

Banner printing services provide large venues, with a degree of added excitement along with directional assistance.

Also contained in the addition will be a new plaza that will be transversed by tower ride giving eight riders at a time:

“an elevated perspective of the zoo and its surroundings.”

Akron Zoo’s director of marketing, Elena Bell, said:

"When we are able to do these big expansions, they are a tourist drive. So, we do bring in more guests and see an increase in economic spent here, not only at the Akron Zoo, but also throughout the city of Akron as they come in to experience these big expansions."

According to Bell the zoo endeavors to bring about a major expansion nearly every decade, adding that these 10-year-spaced projects provide a broader economic impact on the region.

With passage by Akron City Council of the zoo’s conditional use permit, it is anticipated that groundbreaking on the expansion will commence this summer.
