Parade and festival celebrate start of Akron school year

In honor of the 2025-2026 school year’s start in Akron, the city will for a third year in a row host a parade to be followed by the Akron City Festival.

The event is a family-friendly one that celebrates the city’s future leaders. Line up for the parade starts at 1 pm at the Spaghetti Warehouse on Main Street. From there it will go down Main Street, terminating at Lock 3 stage. Mayor Shammas Malik explained in a news release:

“This festival will help us set the tone for our future leaders for their school year and provide some joy and entertainment for parents and kids alike. Join us as we uplift and empower our students to have an amazing year.”

Many organizations seize the opportunity to distribute their business cards or flyers at festivals.

The parade will be comprised of non-profit, youth-serving community-based organizations, plus athletic teams, JROTC and fine arts members from Akron Public Schools. Requests to be included in the parade can be made by organizations by emailing Denico Buckley-Knight.

Activities at the post parade festival will include food trucks, an outdoor basketball court, gaming trucks, a DJ, face painting, bouncy houses, barbers, nail techs, balloon artists, face painting, henna artists, information vendors and giveaways.

Presented by the city of Akron, with support from Downtown Akron Partnership and Akron Public Schools, the celebration of the start of another school year will be held on August 31. The festival runs from noon until 6 pm.
