Grocery store to open in Downtown Akron

Downtown residents and workers will soon have a new place to purchase some grocery items or grab some lunch when The Mercantile Akron opens at 1 Cascade Plaza.

The store, which will be run by Shane Wynn and Becca Gippin, will be much appreciated as those in the Downtown area have longed for somewhere to purchase grocery items for some time.

Mercantile Akron will offer convenience items such grab-and-go meals, drip coffee, fresh produce, fresh baked bread and flowers as well as Akron-branded merchandise. Additionally, the pair also have future plans to add a commercial kitchen to provide corporate catering.

Banner printing services can be valuable to the launch of retail establishments and getting the word out faster. Flyers can also be useful in the local area.

The idea for the Mercantile Akron originated with Gippin, according to Wynn who said:

“Becca Gippin had the idea after working in the service industry in downtown Akron on Main Street and constantly fielding questions from patrons on where to get necessity items. She called me and said, 'I want to open a bodega downtown and you have to help me."

Adding grocery options downtown is expected to help increase the number of downtown residents to meet the city’s goal of 5,000 by 2030. According to Shammas Malik the mayor of Akron in the Beacon Journal, the current population of downtown is 3,100.

Mercantile Akron will become open for business sometime in July.
