Prom Promise helps girls get ready for their big night
In Akron, Savannah James has made the dreams of 38 young women come true via her Prom Promise organization, according to an article in the Akron Beacon-Journal.
Savannah is the wife of NBA star LeBron James, who was born and raised in Akron and created the LeBron James Family Foundation to give back to his hometown. Savannah's “Promise” events are part of the foundation's ongoing work, and this year's Prom Promise is the sixth.
Young women from East and Buchtel high schools attended the April 24 event at the Hilton Akron/Fairlawn, where they were able to pick out brand-new dresses, still with the tags, and choose the one they wanted to wear at the prom. The dresses are theirs to keep.
Perhaps most important was the encouragement the girls got from Savannah, who noted that times are difficult for young women today, particularly because of the pervasiveness of social media, and the negativity often found online. She encouraged them to enjoy their beautiful dresses and to have faith in themselves, their dreams, and decisions. She urged:
With the help of presentation folders, participants of this kind of event can be given a way to organize and keep materials to remind them of the day.
