Planner gives update on Lock 3 project

Akron’s Lock 3 redesign is more than halfway done, and it appears that the plans will be ready for presentation this summer, with the actual physical work on the process to start this fall.

The Lock 3 redesign is being conducted by OLIN, the same Philadelphia-based firm that did the garden redesign at the Akron Art Museum. Approximately 60% complete, OLIN presented its progress to date at a community meeting in mid-February. Around April, at another community meeting, OLIN will return with an accounting of its progress, at which time the company expects plans to be 80% complete.

A large portion of the funding will come from Akron’s 2022 capital budget, which has already been approved and includes the largest ever expenditure by the city for park and recreation investment. Of the $25m set aside for public spaces, $4m has been earmarked for the Lock 3 vision plan, which is estimated to cost $10m in total.

Community feedback has played a significant role in the planning process. The preliminary plans drawn up so far include park-wide Wi-Fi, landscaped gardens, a couple of permanent ice rink infrastructures, and landscaped gardens. A flyer printing service can be key to keeping the public informed on how plans like this progress.

The project will not impact the 2022 summer concerts and festivals. Although the final design plan will be finished this summer, ground breaking will not take place until September.
