Mayor and Downtown Akron Partnership officials announce plan for downtown

Dan Horrigan, Akron's mayor, joined with Downtown Akron Partnership (DAP) officials to announce that the first phase of the Downtown Vision and Redevelopment Plan is complete, according to an article on Akron.com.

Last year, both the mayor and the DAP acknowledged that developing a plan is important to the city's future, and discussed the next phase of the project.

A group of 37 people representing large and small businesses across all sectors and levels of government formed a steering committee to work on the issue. MKSK of Columbus, a consulting firm, was also hired to spearhead the planning.

Mayor Horrigan said that in order for Akron to be able to compete both nationally and regionally, it has to have a “thriving and prosperous urban core.” He says the city has “remarkable potential for growth” but needs a vision for development in the long term, as well as a realistic plan for creating conditions that will encourage investment by companies in the private sector.

The first phase comprised a comprehensive appraisal of current conditions and recognition of key planning principles and opportunities. The second phase of the plan will comprise market studies, implementation and policy strategies, and an effort to get Akron citizens involved in the process.
