Insurer finds new home in Akron

SummaCare, a health insurance plan based in Akron, has relocated its offices within the city, moving from its East Market and South Main location to the old Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company headquarters on East Market Street.

SummaCare, now 25 years old, is the biggest tenant to move into the old Goodyear plant, where ICAN, a charter school, is also located. Goodyear itself, a company that is closely identified with Akron, now has a new headquarters building nearby.

Marketing vice president Anne Armao said SummaCare was delighted to remain in Akron, noting that the company has helped revitalize the area around Market and Main, and will now do the same for the Middlebury neighborhood.

Employees spent three weekends moving to the new location. The reason for the move is somewhat unusual – the old building was too big. SummaCare was once housed in the Portage Hotel, which offered 88,000 square feet. The new location is smaller, spanning about 65,000 square feet.

Dennis Pijor, the president of SummaCare, said moving employees to the new premises was a great way to celebrate the organization's 25th year in business. The company celebrated its relocation with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, which was attended by company executives, as well as officials from the city and county.

Events like this can be even more fun if officials work with a banner printing company to welcome people to the new site.
