Digital walking tour connects Akron residents with city history
As many concerts, markets and sporting events are either postponed or cancelled, there is one activity that is still on the go, and it is one that Akron residents can participate in individually.
Round About Akron: A Digital Walking Tour is an individual experience – just a person and a mobile phone is all that is needed. Tours can be conducted any time, day or night.
The tour is a relatively new concept, the product of 13 University of Akron students, who came up with idea in an art and culture class during the fall semester of 2019. The students created a series of websites that feature some of the hidden gems of Akron's historic downtown district. The websites explain how the brick-and-mortar buildings and parks of downtown Akron connect with the city's cultural history and identity.
The locations include:
• Howard Street
• Matthews Hotel Monument
• Interbelt
• Academy of Music
• Hermes Building
• Quaker Square
• Akron Civic Theater
• Polsky’s
• Mayflower Hotel
• Canal Park
• The Vault
Round About Akron: A Digital Walking Tour attempts to bring Akron's arts and culture history to life. The websites include historical photos, and even soundbites from people who lived Akron's history first-hand. These include Linda Ward, who describes her experience working at the department store Polsky's, which is now one of the University of Akron's educational buildings.
Digital tours can market themselves using flyer printing and poster printing to display at downtown historical sites. More information is available on the University of Akron's website.
