What's Happening in Akron, OH…

Developers considering revamping downtown Akron hotel

The vacant Akron City Center Hotel offers 19 stories that could be used for apartments and hotel rooms, and both developer Joel Testa, who is COO and president of Testa Companies, and David Brennan, who owns the building, are enthusiastic about renovating the property.

Testa and Brennan believe they could transform the old hotel into a destination for both Akron residents and visitors to the city within 10 months, according to an article on the WKYC.com website.

The renovation would cost about $25m, and upon completion would create about 80 hotel rooms, and anything from 80 to 100 apartments, both one- and two-bedroom units. According to Testa, rents for one of the apartments could range from $900 to $1,200 per month.

Also included in the renovations are a gym, a pool, and a movie theater. The roof, which was once a landing pad for helicopters, could be transformed into a beer garden.

Testa said he thinks the project could prove to be a ‘game-changer’. He says Akron is in desperate need of downtown residents, and notes there is a growing trend for people to want to move into a mixed-use, urban, walkable environment, and the renovated hotel would provide that. He says there is already a waiting list for the building.

Projects like this can benefit if developers work with a brochure printing company, which can create illustrated brochures showing the amenities of the completed project.
