Akron trades land to juice company
Akron recently agreed to sell over an acre of land to Country Pure Foods, a food processing company.
The company plans to use the land to enlarge its warehouse, saying that increasing its space will enable it to retain 82 employees whose jobs would otherwise be lost.
Country Pure Foods will be paying $35,000 for the property, which is located on West Waterloo Road, next to its extant facility. It plans to construct a cold storage warehouse comprising 24,000 square feet on the land.
Ellen Lander-Nischt, a spokeswoman for Akron, said Country Pure Foods asked for help from the city, saying it was going to have to leave if it could not find a way to increase its warehousing capacity. She noted that everyone in the city government, including Mayor Horrigan, has made retaining local jobs one of their priorities, as well as creating even more employment opportunities for residents. Since selling the land allowed Country Pure to remain in place, the city was happy to enter into the agreement.
She also noted the company may add as many as 12 jobs, now that it is increasing its space. The company also announced it will be moving its offices to Main Street in downtown Akron.
