Akron recognizes basketball star for community work

Akron's Chamber of Commerce is planning to honor NBA superstar LeBron James at its yearly banquet held this evening.

James will receive the H. Peter Burg award, which is given in recognition of the positive influence his organization, the LeBron James Family Foundation, has had on the children of Akron, and their families.

Thus far, the biggest project the Foundation has tackled in Akron is its ‘I Promise’ endeavor, in which about 700 students in Akron's public schools took a pledge to listen to their parents, and their teachers, and to do the homework assigned to them. James gave a free bicycle to each of the students, and corresponds with them on a regular basis.

James, through his Foundation, regularly supports community activities in Akron. In 2013, the Foundation gave $358,000 to renovate the gym at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, where James was a student. The Foundation also gave $50,000 to the public schools in Akron, almost $100,000 to the Northeast Ohio Basketball Association, and $25,000 to the National Boys and Girls Club. He has also sponsored a bike race, and helped renovate a family home in Akron.

The awards ceremony gets underway at 5:00 pm tonight at Goodyear Hall. Banquet organizers could work with a banner printing company to create something to honor James and his work.
