What's Happening in Akron, OH…

Akron may take over vacant mall

Rolling Acres Mall has been vacant for years, and a sheriff's sale conducted June 21, 2016, continued the trend—there were no bids on the property. The price tag is almost $1.3 million, the amount owed in back taxes. The fiscal officer of Summit County, Kristen Scalise, said that since there were no bids received, the county would begin the process of turning the mall over to the City of Akron.

Scalise said the procedure would probably take at least two months before it was complete, but added they were glad they'd found a solution about what to do with the mall. She also said that once official paperwork is filed, there will be no way for anyone to legally stop the county from turning the mall over to Akron.

The interior of the mall hasn't been open since 2008, and Summit County foreclosed on its owner, Premier Ventures of California, in 2014. The mall has been the subject of four previous sheriff's sales, but each time, the owner field bankruptcy and stopped the sale. This time, Premier Ventures also filed bankruptcy on Monday, the day before the sale, but Summit County decided the sale would go ahead. There is no information yet on what the city plans for the property.
