What's Happening in Akron, OH…

Akron clinic to offer free screenings

The McDowell Cancer Institute at Cleveland Clinic Akron is offering free screenings for skin and breast cancer. Education in ways to prevent the disease will also be offered.

Almost half of all cancers diagnosed in the United States are some form of skin cancer. Dermatologists from the local area, including the Cleveland Dermatological Society and the American Academy of Dermatology, are volunteering to conduct free screenings for skin cancer.

Breast exams will be provided to all women, regardless of whether or not they have insurance of any type. Women will also be given a wellness journal in which they can record their preventive screenings.

The skin cancer screenings are set for May 7 from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm, and will take place at the Akron General Ambulatory Care Center. Parking is free, but people who wish to take advantage of this opportunity are asked to make an appointment.

The breast exams will also be held in the center, but a week later, on May 14, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. If a woman is advised to have a mammogram, or wants to have the examination, she may have it done the same day, or schedule it for a later date.

Event organizers could work with a postcard printing company on a mailer for residents, informing them of the free screenings.
