Wappingers Falls kayakers head to festival

Many kayakers here in Wappingers Falls will be heading to the Hudson River Greenland Festival 2024 in early September.

Created to share the skills and joy of traditional kayaking, the four-day festival will have a "pay it forward" method (observing, learning and teaching) where qajaqing (kayaking in Greenlandic) skills will be showcased. Some skills covered will be mastering paddling techniques, stabilizing the craft, rescue methods for self and others, and rolling.

Full weekend passes will be $320 and will include instruction, meals, and campsite for one adult. For full-time students and children 18 and under, admission will be $220. Families may register for $680. A potluck is scheduled for Thursday evening, catered food will be provided starting Friday night, and a light breakfast will be served Friday morning. Drinking water will be available.

Guests may bring their own kayaks or borrow regular or traditional skin-framed kayaks. Those wishing to roll their crafts must be sure bring foam padding for a tighter fit.

Attendees will want to bring such gear as tents, water bottles, sleeping gear, tableware, sunscreen, hats, water shoes, nose plugs, kayaks, and paddles.

Kayak enthusiasts occasionally get some flyer printing done so they can put flyers up in their neighborhoods and get the word out.

Hudson River Greenland Festival 2024 will take place this Thursday, September 5th, beginning at 3:00 pm, and continues to September 8 closing at 2:00 pm at Fahnestock State Park's Canopus Lake Beach, Appalachian National Scenic Trail, Hopewell Junction.
