Two classes spent several hours volunteering their time to make 119 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for people in need in their community. The effort was part of the lesson planned by Dr. Cinnamon Green and Angela Kremberg. The lesson also included reading biographies of Dr. King and discussing his work and beliefs.
The students were motivated by another famous MLK quote:
"Life’s most persistent and urgent question is ‘what are you doing for others?’”
The students were given the hands-on experience to help them understand the importance of helping others. They were able to discover how community service also helps the person that gives their time and effort. All of the students stated they felt the experience was rewarding, and were honored for being able to contribute to the effort.
The finished sandwiches were carefully wrapped and packaged and then delivered in Boxes sporting custom artwork the children designed in class. Perhaps these same drawings could be saved next year, turned into custom greeting or Holiday Cards, and sold to raise funds for future charity events.
