Two local charities are big winners following recent fundraiser

The Merrick Lions Club has managed to raise $6,000 to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Curé of Ars Food Pantry thanks to its ‘Taste of Merrick’ Fundraiser.

For the fifth year in a row, the Lions Club has held this popular event to help raise funds for two important charitable groups. The event was catered by many local vendors that include both chain restaurants and personally owned organizations. The list included Outback Steakhouse, Anchor Down and Danny's Chinese Kitchen.

The event, held on April 28, honored former fire chief and volunteer firefighter Dr. James Rogers. The Lions Club chose the food pantry as its organization of choice and allowed Dr. Rogers to select a cause of his own to split the money raised. Dr. Rogers selected the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation because of his brother, Daniel Rogers, who passed away from Type 1 diabetes at the age of 34. A nonprofit in his name was begun by Dr. Rogers and has now raised over $125,000 for diabetes research.

For events like this, specially printed Brochures and Menus, passed out in conjunction with other marketing materials, help to provide an added attraction that will likely encourage larger crowds. Working with local restauranteurs and catering services is also an effective way to network and develop new corporate contacts.
