During a recent meeting of the board of the Town of Hempstead, Petros D’Amico, a student in the sixth grade at the Norman J. Levy Lakeside School in the Merrick School District received a Citation for his Courage, Character and Commitment.
Petros was nominated by Joanne Savastano, a special education teacher at Lakeside, for his success in academia, accomplishments and determination despite the challenges he faces from dystonia and cerebral palsy.
Petros began mainstreaming into his general education classes when he started first grade. Each year he has been able to increase the amount of time he spends in these classes.
He is now fully part of social studies, science and math classes in the sixth grade. Through various modifications made by his teaching assistant, Janice Kleinman, he is able to understand and play a full role in these classes.
On another front, five students from the sixth grade will be competing at SUNY Old Westbury in the Nassau County Math Tournament later this month.
The students were selected from more than 100 students in the district who participated in the Math Olympiads from November through March. This competition encourages a love of mathematics and enthusiasm for the subject. The tournament will be held on May 24.
The school may consider newsletter printing to inform the parents and the community about these recent accomplishments.
