DeTommaso has held the position for the past eight years, but will vacate it on June 30th, 2021.
His history as an educator in Bellmore-Merrick began in 1988 when he taught social studies at Wellington C. Mepham High School. Following six years in that position, the future superintendent became the district’s director of athletics for two years. After several years as Sanford H. Calhoun High School assistant principal, DeTommaso took the position of Bethpage High School principal where he remained for six years. Next, he was superintendent for curriculum in that school district, a position that lasted four years.
De Tommaso received praise from Board of Education President Gina Piskin via letter a read recently at a board meeting. The letter states:
"During this time, DeTommaso has done an exceptional job in fulfilling the duties as our educational leader. The growth of our district during his tenure can be measured in numerous ways and by a multitude of achievements among our students and staff."
Effective July 1st, 2021 the new appointed superintendent, Michael Harrington, will assume DeTommaso’s job. Harrington is currently the district’s assistant superintendent of curriculum, but will soon need to update his Business Cards to show his new role.
