Renovated Merrick store gets a new tech-focused look

The Stop & Shop supermarket in Merrick at the South Merrick Mall recently reopened after being completely remodeled during a four-month spell.

The new store has grown from 16,000 to 24, 000 square feet, has an expanded produce selection, and hopes to provide a shopping experience that will be more convenient for its customers – helped in no small part by some technological introductions.

According to store manager Rob Altenburger, there will be a greater assortment of products, a full-service deli, and wider meat and seafood selections. There is also a new décor and fixtures, with LED lighting installed in many areas of the store.

Also new to the store is the SCAN IT! technology, where customers use a handheld scanner to scan and then bag groceries as they shop. There is a running tally of the bill, so customers can keep track of their purchases and then check out using their mobile phones.

Another technology tool in the store is Deli Vision. Customers make their choices on the ordering device, get a printout of their selections with their prices, and then can pick up their order when it is ready.

Retailers like Stop & Shop often work with a Print company to create a weekly insert in the local newspaper that features specials and coupons to bring customers to the store.
