The announcement by Robert Mujica from the State Division of the Budget, which confirms New York will also give its residents an additional 30 days, came two days after the IRS and US Department of the Treasury made theirs.

Mujica issued the following statement:
“At the Governor’s direction, the Department of Tax and Finance will be extending the New York State income tax deadline to May 17 to align with the federal decision to do the same. This will shift approximately $6 billion of revenue from April to May and the State will make any necessary adjustments to cash-flow.”
Changing the date of income tax collection will necessitate state officials finding a backup plan to plug the resulting hole in the state’s budget. Governor Cuomo’s office and the New York State Legislature are currently working on the state budget, which is due on Thursday, April 1.
Several other states have shifted their income tax deadline to coincide with that of the federal government, including New Jersey.
