Merrick residents will have a new top doctor looking out for their health, as Dr. Irina Gelman, the former Orange County Health Commissioner, is now taking over the same position here in Nassau County.
Orange County hired Gelman to be its County Health Commissioner in 2018, prior to which she was the public health director for Fulton County. In her new position, she will be serving a population of 1.4 million as opposed to Orange County’s 385,000.

Gelman, who speaks Yiddish, Russian, and Spanish fluently, received the New York State Woman of Distinction Award in 2018. Last month, she was presented with the Liberty Bell Award. In 2010, she earned her Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine at New York College of Podiatric Medicine and in 2014 finished her residency at Coney Island Hospital.
Steven Neuhaus, an Orange County executive, was quoted by Times Hudson Valley Media News as saying:
“I want to congratulate Dr. Gelman on her new position and wish her the best. I commend Dr. Gelman for her tireless work for Orange County, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, as she played an integral role in the response to the unprecedented public health emergency.”
Gelman is continuing to remain an active New York State Academy of Medicine fellow while also serving as board vice president for the New York State Association of County Health officials.
