Multiple Merrick expectant mothers hold up flights at airport

Amused passengers took to social media to report the appearance of several ‘trespassers’ on the tarmac at JFK Airport.

Merrick residents should be on the lookout for an unusual group of troublemakers. At least one flight was delayed for a short period of time as diamondback terrapins crossed the runway to their nesting site. The small turtles regularly nest in the sandy soil around the airport and tend to gather during this time of year in order to lay their eggs.

Airport officials have not confirmed the appearance of the rebellious reptiles, but the incident was reported by numerous passengers on social media. Approximately 500 pregnant diamondback turtles were spotted at this same airport in 2016, and have been seen in previous years as well. This means that travelers using the airport should expect the potential for a short delay if additional turtles make their way to their favorite maternity ward.

Nature lovers should not rush out to the airport to view the turtles, as the creatures are usually found in brackish water around the state. They should also avoid approaching any nests because the turtles will abandon the eggs if they are threatened.

The turtles nest through July and are often seen the rest of the year sunning themselves on rocks near the water. Photographers will find plenty of opportunities for unique photos for Calendars or poster printing by looking around marshy areas, or visiting the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Nassau County.
