A fun pair of fundraisers promises that members of the armed forces get their share of sweetness during the holidays.
The Merrick Avenue Middle School student council has worked together with Levy-Lakeside Elementary School students to gather candy to send to service members through its fundraiser known as Operation Sweet Tooth. The group of kids wanted to do something to help soldiers to have some fun over the holiday season. Faculty advisers guided the students at the schools throughout the fundraising process to help them reach their goals.
An additional area fundraiser also collected sweets for service members. The Grand Avenue school developed Operation Gratitude. These students also requested donations of leftover candy from Halloween from community members and other students for their gift packages that were sent overseas. The school hosts activities like this so that its can students to live up to the school statement of ‘Grand CARES’ - the acronym stands for compassionate, accountable, respectful, equitable, and strong.
Operation Sweet Tooth has been a popular fundraising event since 2003, and has spread virally and through local flyer printing since its first event. This year, the students collected over 300lb of candy to send overseas. The students typically ship the Boxes of sweets close to Veterans Day to ensure the packages reach their destination during the holiday season.
