Beatrice Brown, a student at the John F. Kennedy High School from the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, has won a $2,500 college scholarship from the National Merit Scholarship Program for 2015.
There were 15,000 finalists from a group of over 1.4 million students who took the PSAT/NMSQT exam in the fall of 2013, from which the 2,500 scholarship winners for the year were selected.
Beatrice had also created a project about forecasting hurricanes in the Long Island area, and was a semifinalist in the Intel Science Talent Search for this project. This effort also made her one of two students to win the Young Naturalist Award of the American Museum of Natural History.
The inspiration for her Intel project was based on the devastation to her community and the loss of the personal belongings of her own family during Superstorm Sandy. Her independent research developed predictive models that coastal communities on Long Island face by hurricane hazards. She most likely used a local Print company to print the report of her project.
Advanced science research teacher at Kennedy High School, Barbara Franklin, commented that Beatrice worked very hard on this project, as it grew out of a desire to help her community.
