Some student councils spend their time on issues that matter only to their classmates and their school, but duties at the Chatterton School in the Merrick School District are a little different. The mission of this student council is to make a difference in the lives of the families in the district.
This mission took the form of a toy drive in the last few months of 2016. The students in the group all understand the importance of having a least a couple of gifts under every Christmas tree. To ensure that no child in their community went without, they organized a drive that included students, teachers, and staff at their school. Together, enough funds were raised to purchase around 100 new toys for area children. The local Kiwanis club received the toys from the school and distributed them to needy area families.
The student council adviser, a second grade teacher at the school, explained that this is only one of the many charity drives the council undertakes each year. The school encourages this type of event to enable the students that serve on the council to have real-life experience providing a helping hand to their community.
Residents, whether they have children or not, can contact the school to learn more about their future drives. Anyone interested in aiding their attempts should consider providing funds for advertising for each drive.
