One of the thousands of high school students from around the country who have made it into the 2022 National Merit Scholarship semi-finals is Merrick resident Eric Avellone.
Avellone is a Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District student who attends Sanford H. Calhoun High School. He is one of an estimated 16,000 to be in the running for one of prestigious National Merit Scholarships.
Most schools, whether public or private, seize every opportunity to confer with local banner printing services when one of their teams or students earns an award or tournament, so they can prominently announce the fact.
In February 2002, semi-finalists will find out if they have advanced to the finalist stage from which the scholarship winners will be selected. Merit scholars are chosen based on the following criteria – their accomplishments, skills and potential to succeed in a demanding course of college studies.
By Spring 2022, three kinds of National Merit Scholarships will be awarded.
All finalists will be vying for one of 2,500 scholarships worth $2,500 each, which are given out on a state-representational basis. Additionally, about 220 business organizations and corporations will be providing 1,000 Merit Scholarships. The largest number of scholarships will go to finalists who will be attending one of the colleges and universities that are sponsoring a total of around 4,000 scholarships.
