Merrick elementary school shows its happiness

The International Day of Happiness was recently celebrated by students at the Old Mill Road Elementary School in North Merrick.

This day was made possible by third grader Danielle Gordon, who had sent a letter to Pharrell Williams, author of the song ‘Happy’, requesting the ability to collaborate with him in turning the song into a children’s book.

The day began with the halls decorated with Posters created by each grade in the school, with a happy saying and a picture of the students in an activity that makes them cheerful. The next step in ideas like this could be to hire a poster printing company to create posters of the lyrics of the song and place them in the hallways as well.

A happy face sticker and a Post-it was placed on the desk of each student as they entered class. A “quart of kindness” was also given to each student and this bucket was to be filled with compliments and kind words about everyone. The Post-it was used for each student to write something they liked about themselves.

There was also an assembly that day where the band played Pharrell's ‘Happy’ and all students made a happy emoji face. At the assembly, Danielle and her mother Michelle were presented with an award by the school district’s superintendent for their efforts in creating the day.
