Merrick canine fans invited to DogFest

The 2018 DogFest Long Island celebration is helping pet lovers have fun while supporting a good cause.

Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) is a nonprofit organization that breeds, trains, and donates assistance dogs to people in need. The dogs learn how to manage tasks like alert to sounds, retrieve items, and open doors, as well as much more. The group organizes the DogFest celebration as a fun way to help draw attention to the cause, as well as to raise money for its mission.

CCI encourages participants to establish groups and fundraise for the event. The group currently has over 400 people on their waiting list, so help from the community is essential. There are many other ways to help organizations like this, such as flyer printing.

DogFest will include a DogWalk fundraiser as well as a variety of dog demonstrations, live speakers, music, and food. The event includes canine graduates and their families as well as trainers and other volunteers. Pets and people are welcome to attend.

The event is this Satuday, October 20, from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM and will take place at the Tanger Outlets located at 152 Arches Circle in Deer Park. Parking and admission are free. Register for the DogWalk at the Support CCI webpage, or learn more about volunteer opportunities at the CCI website.
