Main street in Freeport to experience transformation

The North Main Street corridor of the Village of Freeport will soon be undergoing a multimillion-dollar renovation project.

Both Nassau County and the village are collaborating on this project. An amount of $1,069,084 has been approved by the County for the work and the village will contribute an additional $545,000. The project will include decorative planters, adding 70 trees to the street, benches, and landscaping of the street. Residents from nearby Merrick will most certainly want to visit the street once the work is completed.

The Region Transportation Improvement Plan of the federal government has also given the County $2.3m to rebuild nine traffic signals on the street. Running from the border of the village to the intersection of Church Street. Crosswalk signals and traffic lights will be replaced with the addition of traffic surveillance cameras, pedestrian "bump-outs" on corners to increase safety for pedestrians, and improved drainage.

The renovations are expected to begin next spring and the village may have already looked into a banner printing company to create Banners and other printed materials to put along North Main Street, informing residents of the project.

According to Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, the goal of this project is to bring new businesses and investments into the village and transform downtown Freeport into a lively neighborhood where people will want to work, live, and raise a family.
