What's Happening in Merrick, NY…

Recently, the Health Occupations Students of America (H.O.S.A.), an interscholastic club at Freeport High School not far from Merrick, coordinated their efforts with the Port Washington Commisso and Company Salon to hold an event that benefited Locks of Love.

The H.O.S.A. program is designed to make students aware of the many opportunities that are available in the healthcare industry, with community service being a large component of the program. H.O.S.A. looks to build the self-esteem of children who have been affected by cancer and Locks of Love helps them by providing children who have long-term medical loss with high quality hair prosthetics.

Lynda Tinglin, a member of H.O.S.A. and a junior at Freeport High School, was looking for a project to highlight childhood cancer and, after discussion with other members of the group, came up with the idea to donate their hair to Locks of Love as the weight minimum did not enable them to donate blood. She spoke with Saree Wiener, a Freeport High School interim social worker and a client of Commisso to find a hair stylist for their idea. Commisso had participated in such charitable events in the past, so the salon was able to work with the students for their event.
