The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District has recently been the focus of several awards for students, and is no doubt now using flyer printing to announce these recognitions and distinctions to the communities.
This year’s winner of the Italian Heritage and Culture Month Essay contest is Rachel Woodiwiss, a ninth grader at John F. Kennedy High School. She is in the Italian honors 2 class of Antonietta Valenti and was given the award for her essay on Matthew Biondi, an Olympic Gold Medal swimmer.
The essay contest is designed to highlight someone of Italian heritage who has made a notable contribution to society. Woodiwiss is also a swimmer, and Biondi’s accomplishments as an Italian-American competitive swimmer inspired her to write about him.
In addition, five students in the district have been named as semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Competition for 2015. These include Nicholas Kearney from Sanford H. Calhoun High School, who taught himself Python and Java computer languages and created several programs using them, while Beatrice Brown from John F. Kennedy High School is the class valedictorian for 2015 for the school.
The other three are all from John F. Kennedy High School as well; Nicholas Field and Justin Shapiro are both members of several honor societies, while Seth Gottlieb has attended the Center for Talented Youth programs at several prestigious colleges and universities.
