Students at the Babylon Elementary School, which is a short distance from Merrick, are involved during this holiday season in several community service projects that will support individuals both locally and abroad.
One of these is the Adopt A Soldier program. Through this, civilians are connected with deployed troops serving in the United States Armed Forces and are provided the opportunity to communicate encouragement and express gratitude for their service.
Nine soldiers have been adopted by the students as part of this effort. Throughout the course of the year, both staff and students will be sending packages to these people who have a personal connection with Babylon. During this month, individualized letters or artwork were created by the classes for the recipients to express thanks for their service. Care packages were also sent to three deployed soldiers as the school worked with the Blue Ribbon Moms program.
According to Jessica Kemler, principal of the school, the hope is that the soldiers will be excited when they received these packages and be able to feel the spirit of their home during the holiday season.
A warm coat drive and a giving tree are also being coordinated by the school to support families in the community.
