Not far from Merrick, the Long Island Chestnut Festival is coming to the Baldwin Community Garden at the Baldwin Historical Society and Museum.
The Historical Society is partnering with the Baldwin Civic Association and Seatuck Environmental Association to host this festival, which is designed to celebrate the American chestnut tree and its reintroduction to the northern hemisphere. It promises to be fun and educational for the entire family while remaining focused on the environment.
The Baldwin Historical Society and Civic Association will open the festival with a presentation to Nassau County to recognize the planting of over 300, following the loss of many of them as a result of Hurricane Sandy.
There will be other activities for people of all ages, including games, arts and crafts, and information for ecologists and gardeners. The Cornell Cooperative extension will have information about soil, composting and wood turning, while Sustainable Long Island will put on a special demonstration. A nature walk and scavenger hunt are planned to identify leaves as well.
During the festival, there will be a tour of the Baldwin Community Garden and samples of roasted chestnuts available to try.
