The annual Blue and Gray Awards dinner and ceremony was recently held at Sanford H. Calhoun High School in Merrick.
These awards are given to students who are considered unsung heroes of the school. They have worked hard, have a strong sense of character and leadership, and contributed to the spirit of Calhoun High School, often overcoming obstacles and meeting great adversity.
These students also nominate and recognize a teacher who has been a positive influence on their education and growth during their adolescent years.
The ceremony recognized 14 students and 12 teachers. During it, many poignant tributes were exchanged between teachers and students, with anecdotes that illustrated the contribution, dedication, and sense of humor of the honorees to the school community.
Teachers were called first to present the award, which is a bronze colt and plaque, to the student. Following this, the student spoke about the teacher they nominated.
According to Assistant Principal Nicole Hollings, who was the emcee for the ceremony, this group is compassionate and kind to the extent above and beyond that of their peers and can be looked to as role models by both students and adults.
