The 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program recently announced its semifinalists, and three seniors from the Bellmore-Merrick school district are among the 16,000 to have make it that far from across the country.
The three locals are Rachel E. Jozwik from Wellington C. Mepham High School; Alaina Anderson from Sanford H. Calhoun High School; and Maximilian Bazil from John F. Kennedy High School.
These students were screened during the last academic year based on their Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test scores from 2015. Close to 1.6 million juniors from over 22,000 high schools across the country entered the program for this academic year.
They need to fulfill several requirements in order to advance to the finalist round. Among these are a plan to enroll full-time in college for next fall, recommendation for a National Merit Scholarship by their high school principal, providing any additional requested documentation, and demonstrating very strong and consistent academic performance, whether this is in high school or any college courses taken.
There is the potential to earn one of the 7,500 National Merit Scholarships, with a total worth of about $3m, that will be distributed next spring.
The school district might consider using several Print companies to create Flyers and other materials that can be distributed throughout the district announcing the achievement of these students.
