Additional area code may be in works for Nassau County

According to Nassau County officials, a second area code may soon be necessary due to the high demand for phone numbers and the dwindling number of phone numbers left to give out.

At the moment, the 516-area code Merrick residents use is also used for all of Nassau County, but SomosGov, Inc., the entity that assigns area codes as well as phone number is projecting that by the third quarter of 2023 all of the 516-phone number will have been issued.

An area code overlay has been suggested for Nassau County by Somos to deal with the projected upcoming lack of available numbers. How this would work is this: Existing numbers would be unaffected; however, new numbers would be issued with the new area code.

Print shops are often called upon to create printed materials, either Posters or Flyers to explain pending changes to public services to residents.

According to the Public Service Commission the enormous demand for new phone numbers is due to the growth of tablet computers, cell phones and other electronic devices.

Area code overlays are a frequently used solution when new phone numbers are in short supply. Usually, the introduction of a second area code requires all phone users to begin using a 10-digit dialing for even local calls. In Nassau County the creation of the 988 National Foundation for Suicide Prevention hotline resulted in residents in the county already having to use 10-digit dialing.
