Time to set sail for seals near Manhasset

In winter, seals are a common sight along Long Island beaches, and a Manhasset area organization will be offering cruises that will take passengers into the seal’s world.

The tours, which have been organized by the Riverhead Foundation for marine Research and Preservation, will leave the dock in Freeport throughout the winter months. Passengers will have an opportunity to observe seals and other marine life, and naturalist will be onboard who will provide details about the ecology of the area and the animals that inhabit it.

Since it tends to be chilly out on the water during this time of the year, the boat’s cabin is heated for the comfort of the passengers. Food and other light refreshments will be available for purchase by anyone who would like a bite to eat. Booklet printing can be used to craft simple identifications guides that can be distributed to the passenger to help them identify the marine life they encounter during an excursion like this.

The cruises are scheduled to head out each Saturday and Sunday from January until April, which is the season when the seals are on the beaches. The boat sets out from Freeport, and boarding starts at 12:30 pm. The trip lasts for about two hours, and those who plan on participating are strongly encouraged to visit the Riverhead Foundation’s website for further details and to ensure there will be a boat trip that day.
