Eating fresh seasonal vegetables can be good for both the diet and pocketbook, and a Manhasset area event will share the secrets of how people can grow their own at home.
The Queens County Farm Museum will be hosting a workshop that will see its farmers teach members of the public tips that can help them get the most from their veggie gardens. It will be taught using hands-on methods and a focus on organic techniques.
The participants in the session will receive advice about site selection, which crops will grow best in the area and the importance of weeding and watering. They should walk away with an enhanced knowledge of the differences between using transplants and direct seeding, and how to harvest their crop once it is ripe and ready. The instruction provided will stress using methods that are kind to the health of both the environment and the people who will eat the produce grown.
Since the number of spaces in the class is limited, advance registration is required. The fee to participate is $30 for nonmembers and $25 for museum members. Print shops can be called upon to produce Copies of handouts and other materials for this type of learning event.
The Veggie Gardening Basics workshop will be held on March 24 at 7350 Little Neck Pkwy in Floral Park. Anyone who is interested in finding out more can obtain additional details on the organizer’s Facebook page.
