Banners with the faces of local veterans will be installed along Main Street on telephone poles in Port Washington leading up to Memorial Day. This may be of interest to those in neighboring Manhasset.
Home Run Electric, the local electric company, and the Port Washington Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 1819 are working together to install 86 Banners. Each banner will have the faces and names of veterans from World War I to the present. They will be on 62 telephone poles from the Town Dock to Port Washington Boulevard.
Ken Kraft, a Vietnam War veteran and former Manorhaven Trustee, came up with the idea after he raised $10,000 for a similar program in Gen Head, where he used to live. The VFW post then worked with Mariann Dalimonte, a councilmember of the town of North Hempstead, to make this a reality by completing the paperwork and obtaining the requisite permits.
Once the project was approved, the VFW post partnered with the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce, American Legion Post 509, and the Port Washington Fire Department to spread the word about the initiative. Dozens of applications were reviewed and scanned images were sent to the banner printing company for display. Kraft added that the response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive.
The Banners will remain in place through Veterans Day.
