Albuquerque bids farewell to special exhibit

A piece being hosted at the Natural Hispanic Cultural Center will be closing soon. The exhibit, titled ‘Because It’s Time: Unraveling Race and Place in NM’, has been on display since May 4 of last year.

The exhibit takes a mixture of new and existing pieces to explore race and identity, what shapes our existence, and how people come to live in certain places, but not others. The new pieces were created by various artists with differing experiences of New Mexico; the existing pieces were loaned by the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum’s permanent collection. Each work of art brings a unique perspective to the exhibit, which is meant to be thought-provoking and curious.

While the exhibit covers such diverse topics as race, gender, class, sexuality, and nationality, it is also different in that it was set up in a rather abnormal manner. Staff and interns worked to determine how an exhibit might look if the artists set it up, rather than museum staff, and some of the works in the gallery were not even completed until a few weeks before the opening of the exhibit.

The National Hispanic Cultural Center is located on Fourth Street in Albuquerque. Events like this often use flyer printing to help advertise and bring in new guests, especially for special exhibits that are only temporary. This exhibit is set to close on February 28.
