Schoolboard and education association approve new agreement

The Northvale Education Association (NEA) and the Board of Education recently agreed to a three-year contract.

The contract, which went into effect July 1, expires June 30, 2019 and includes several pay increases over the period.

Clerks, secretaries, custodians and teachers received a 3.2% increase at the start of this month. A 3.1% increase is scheduled for the 2017-2018 school year, and a 3.0% increase is also scheduled for the following (2018-2019) school year. For the 2016-2017 school year, a teacher's starting salary is $49,500.

In addition, teachers will receive longevity increments depending on their length of service to the district, with extra amounts going to those who have been with the district for 15, 20, and 22 years.

NEA representatives attended the meeting at which the agreement was announced, and said they appreciated how well they had been able to work with the schoolboard. NEA negotiator David Herndon said the administration and association share a lot of the same views, including the fact they both “hate negotiating.”

Herndon added that the two groups have a good working relationship, and have come through the negotiations with respect on both sides. He said the experience has enhanced their relationship, and the fact the NEA approved the contract unanimously goes to show how strong the ties are.
