Northvale to host 2017 fire chiefs event

City officials recently announced that Northvale will be the site of this year's Fire Chiefs Parade.

This will be the 63rd year for the event, which takes place each October. The parades began in 1954 and honor fire departments in the area, as well as commemorating the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The parade also marks the start of Fire Prevention Week.

A group of 15 to 20 fire departments – all of which are members of the Interboro Mutual Aid Group – are expected to take part. The group was founded in 1954 so that communities in northeast Bergen County could assist each other when needed. The fire departments of the members provide fire protection for one another.

The parade rotates through the towns that are members of the group, with Tenefly hosting last year's parade. Ed Rejmaniak, Northvale's fire chief, said everyone in the department was excited that borough was named this year’s host.

The final date for the event has not been finalized, but should be in early October. The parades traditionally begin at 11:00 am and last for about two hours. Floats and fire apparatus are judged, and awards are given for best rescue trucks, best ladder trucks, and best pumper vehicles.

The Northvale Fire Department will cook hamburgers and hotdogs, and souvenirs will be sold to help defray expenses. No doubt festive Banners will add to the fun too.
