Northvale senior facility welcomes new director

The James F. McGuire Senior Center in Northvale once again has a director, after the position had been vacant for almost six months. Pam Carpanini has stepped into the job.

Toni Macchio, a Northvale councilwoman, said the difficulty in finding a director was exacerbated by the loss of the former director. Dolores Alfis passed away in December, after having held the position since 2002. However, she has been involved with the facility from 1982 onwards, so it was difficult for people at the center to choose her replacement.

City officials went through a lot of interviews and applications, but found Carpanini’s was the standout. Macchio described her as a great people-person who brings a great deal of energy to the position, and who has already impressed them.

Carpanini is a life-long resident of Northvale, and has been active in the community all her life, during which she has developed many friendships that enabled her to transition easily into her new post.

The senior center in Northvale also serves residents from nearby towns such as Norwood, Harrington Park, Old Tappan, and Closter. Lunch is served daily, there are exercise programs during the week, and a van that brings seniors from their homes to the center. Other activities include a crochet club, and bingo.
