Northvale senior center awarded grant

The James F. McGuire Memorial Senior Center is set to receive a grant in the amount of $38,000 from the Bergen County Division of Community Development. The money was awarded early in August, and is given annually. According to Northvale mayor Ed Piehler, the amount fluctuates with the county’s budget, and the center receives the grant each year.

The county’s community development division partners with the county’s 70 municipalities to aid in development efforts, according to Rob Esposito, who is the director. He says there are many guidelines for ways in which the funds should be used, but broadly speaking, they’re aimed at low- to moderate-income individuals and areas, and citizens who are otherwise vulnerable. Senior citizens often fall into that category.

Esposito notes that the division has been funding the Northvale center for more than ten years. The facility is the chief senior center in the northeast part of the county. Although the center is located in Northvale, seniors from surrounding towns are welcome to enjoy programs there.

Mayor Piehler agrees the center is important to seniors throughout the region, not just those living in Northvale. They can have lunch, take classes, get warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and perhaps most importantly, interact with others. Programs range from arts classes to Zumba sessions.

Facilities such as these can benefit by working with brochure printers to create Booklets outlining their programs and services.
