Three Bergen County organizations are teaming up to help the homeless this season.
Streetsmart Outreach and the Bergen County Division of Veterans Services will join with the Volunteer Center to collect donations to support homeless people, approximately one-third of whom are veterans.
Director of Veterans Service Richard Daul says it is impossible to accurately tell how many people are homeless because the population is transient, but it appears that at any given time, over 100 veterans are without homes in Bergen County.
Streetsmart Outreach works to support homeless runaways, teens, and young adults. The problem is increasing, with more than 200 young people homeless in 2014.
Donations on the “wish list” include blankets, Backpacks, sleeping Bags, toiletry items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, razors, combs and brushes, shaving cream, feminine hygiene products, towels, and bags to hold the items. Underwear for both women and men, socks, and sweatshirts are also on the list.
People who are able to help are urged to bring their donations to the Volunteer Center in Hackensack, at 64 Passaic Street, from January 12 to 15 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. On the final day of January 15, the Center will extend this opportunity until 7:00 pm
The organizations could work with a postcard printing company to create mailers asking for help from area residents.Get a Free Quote for Backpacks Get a Free Quote for Bags
