What could have been a tragedy became a celebration to remember, thanks to an off-duty Northvale police officer. On May 28, 2017, a boy and his family, as well as Sergeant Michael Graham of the Northvale Police Department, were attending a Memorial Day party in Emerson. During the event, the boy lost consciousness while he was swimming; according to witnesses, his lips were blue.

He was pulled out of the pool by another attendee, and Sergeant Graham immediately started CPR and resuscitated the boy, according to an article on North Jersey.com. First responders and Emerson police officers arrived quickly, and took the youth to a local hospital. He is expected to make a complete recovery. Michael Mazzeo, the Chief of Police in Emerson, praised Graham, saying he’d done an:

“outstanding job”

This isn’t the first time the Northvale sergeant has won praise. In 2016, Graham and two other officers received the Officer of the Year Award from the Closter Elks Lodge. The lodge recognized Graham for his part in helping to crack a child pornography case in 2015. His work enabled police to arrest a suspect who was subsequently charged with child welfare endangerment, and having child pornography in their possession.
